What does an ancient Israeli war, an old man sitting on a rock, and The Bible Study Coach have in common? Here are a couple of hints: the ancient Israeli war was with Amalek and the old man sitting on a rock was Moses.
Hi, I’m Tommy Wright and in following what I believe to be the Lord’s will as I expand my ministry into an area called The Bible Study Coach. Let’s look at the Scriptures to find an answer to the question about what I have in common with an ancient Israeli war, and and old man sitting of a rock.
Exodus 17 is a significant chapter in Jewish history. The passage begins with the Children of Israel being camped in Rephidim. But there was a problem. As verse one tells us, “there was no water for the people to drink.” Because of this hardship, the people began to chide (severely criticize) Moses and tempt the Lord.
By the time we get to verse three, the people are extremely thirsty. What did they do? The Bible says, “. . . the people murmured against Moses . . .” They focused and vented their thirst-induced anger toward Moses. They talked among themselves in a very negative way about Moses. The people began to ask, “Why did you ever bring us out of Egypt to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?” A mob attitude and behavior soon developed.
Moses did the only productive thing he could have done. He cried unto the Lord saying, “What shall I do unto this people? They be almost ready to stone me.”
The Lord, in His infinite grace, mercy, and sovereign power, instructed Moses to smite a rock. When he did, an abundant supply of water began to flow.
Simply stated, the Children of Israel tempted the Lord God and He demonstrated His presence, patience, and power as the Omnipotent One.
Although the thirsty Israelites now had plenty of water to drink as well as plenty of water for their livestock, their problems were far from over. They were about to enter into battle with Amalek.
There is no better way to describe the events that followed than to read the Biblical account of what happened: “And Moses said to Joshua, Choose us out men and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand. So Joshua did as Moses had said unto him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses’ hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. And Joshua discomfited [defeated] Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword” (Exodus 17:9-13).
Verse 12 holds the key to victory in this battle. When Aaron and Hur held up the hands of Moses, God gave His people, the Israelites, victory.
Perhaps you are asking, “What does this ancient Israeli war and an old man sitting on a rock have to do with The Bible Study Coach.” No, I am not a Joshua and I am not a Moses, but thank you for asking the question.
The Old Testament prophet Amos prophesied, “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord: And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it” (Amos 8:11-12).
This prophecy refers to a time of a severe shortage of hearing, with intelligence or understanding, the words of the Lord. In making application for our day and age, this verse speaks about a time when people will not be able to accurately interpret the Bible, God’s Word. We are living in such a time.
Since Satan knows the Word of God is powerful and sharper than any two edged sword, he is constantly doing everything in his power to prevent both the reading and the accurate interpretation of the Bible.
As The Bible Study Coach, I want to equip Christian believers to “rightly divide the Word of Truth,” to interpret the Bible with greater accuracy.
Just as Aaron and Hur lifted up the hands of Moses, I’m asking you to lift me up to God in prayer. While the passage in Exodus chapter 17 does not explicitly say Aaron and Hur were praying for/with Moses, it certainly provides a vivid prophetic illustration of prayer support. I am such a person in need of your prayer support.
Will you join with me a Team 17:12 Prayer Support effort and by doing so will you lift me up in prayer support in the following areas:

3. Will you ask the Lord to spiritually protect me and guide me in order that everything I do will glorify Him?
This ministry is still in its infancy and planning stages. Your prayers are greatly appreciated.
